After I graduated from law school and took the bar, I decided I needed to do something fun for myself and started looking for a sewing class. I knew how to hand sew but I wanted to learn to use a sewing machine. I found a class, loved learning how to use the machine, completed a gorgeous dress with the help of my instructor… and promptly forgot about my sewing machine as soon as I put it away.
Fast forward approximately 500 years later to 2020 and my basic sewing skills suddenly came in kind of handy. I made hundreds of masks for friends, family, and frontline workers. It was a steep learning curve since it had been so long since I’d used my machine, but it made me feel really good that I was able to help in some small way. It also helped build up some sewing confidence so, every now and then, I will try sewing something new.
